STATEMENT
Good governance involves putting in place systems and processes to ensure that a charity achieves its charitable objectives with integrity and is managed in an effective, efficient, accountable and transparent way.
Drama League of Ireland, as a Charities Organisation and a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG), is subject to following the Charities Regulator Governance Code, as outlined by The Charities Regulatory Authority (CRA), Ireland’s national statutory regulator for charitable organisations. Drama League of Ireland is a non-complex Charity. The Company is in full compliance with the Charities Governance Code as issued by The Charities Regulator of Ireland.
Structure of Drama League of Ireland
The Board of Directors of Drama League of Ireland are the Charity trustees who are responsible for the governance of their charity and endeavouring to ensure that the principles of the Charities Governance Code are being applied. A maximum of 12 can serve on the Board, consisting of a Chairperson, and 11 Board members. All on the Board serve on a voluntary capacity. There are many other non-board volunteers who support the work done on behalf of amateur drama (eg Facebook administrator, members of DLI Summer School Committee).
There is one full-time employee, an administrator/advisor, who works at the Head Office and Library located at Drama League of Ireland Head Office, Mill Theatre, Dundrum Town Centre, Dundrum 16, Dublin, D16 C5X6.
The main services offered by Drama League of Ireland include theatre training (drama workshops, annual residential week-long Summer School, weekend-long Winter School), an advisory service, play licencing service, theatre library, overseeing the One Act Drama Circuit (in association with ADCI), running a playwriting competition (in association with ADCI, supported by The Ramor Theatre), circulating a bi-annual magazine, fortnightly drama news bulletins by email, and frequent drama news updates on Social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).
Drama League of Ireland’s activities are funded by membership fees and a small commission from acting as agent to a number of playwrights and companies, licencing performance rights of plays. DLI has benefited in recent years from small grants from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, (as it is currently named), which were used to support theatre training. Many thanks to the Arts Council for the very welcome funding in the past year, which allowed more extensive theatre training and the development of playwriting to take place.
