DLI Summer School

The Summer School takes place in UL from Saturday July 20th to Saturday July 27th 2024.

Courses are now fully booked as outlined below. Please email summerschool@dli.ie to be placed on Waiting lists.

The course fees are as follows:

  • Residential  (includes tuition, bed, lunch & dinner):
    for DLI members €630   /  for non-members €710
  • Non-Residential  (includes tuition and lunch only):
    for DLI members €370   /  for non-members €420

The following terms and conditions have been drawn up to enable us to comply with our contractual obligations with the University of Limerick.

Course fees

A non-refundable deposit fee of €150 is payable when registering for any course in the Summer School. The remaining fee must be paid by June 1st to secure a place on your particular course. Alternatively, the fees can be paid in full when registering for your course.

Cancellations

Cancellations made after June 1st will result in the loss of the booking and accommodation fees. Cancellations made after July 1st may result in the loss of the full Summer School fee. The Summer School Committee will assist in getting a replacement for anyone who has to cancel, and if successful, will negate these particular clauses.

Summer School Etiquette

Respect for your fellow participants, tutors, catering and campus staff is required at all times, and breaches of this will result in sanctions up to and including expulsion from the Summer School.

Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and will result in expulsion from the Summer School.

Participants are strictly forbidden from inviting outside guests to stay in their accommodation during the term of Summer School.

These conditions are for health and safety compliance, as well as for insurance purposes.

 

Summer School Awards and Bursaries

Anyone who wins an award at a festival of a Summer School bursary, and wishes to defer attending the next up Summer School, must provide the SS Director with the written consent of the awarding festival/organisation. Deferrals will only be allowed for one year by the Summer School Committee in this instance.

Bursaries/scholarships awarded by local authorities must be taken in the year they are awarded for.

Course A :

Theatrical Trek:            A Weeklong Journey into Improv, Scriptwork,and Stagecraft

Tutor: Heather Visocchi

Embark on a theatrical adventure with this weekek-long Drama Course for beginnersand improvers.

Dive into the world of drama as you explore improvisation, devising,scriptwork, and even a touch of Shakespearean flair!

Over 7 days, you'll unleash your creativity, hone your performance skills, and collaborate with fellow entusiasts to bring stories to life on stage.

For Beginner and

Improver Directors

Tutor: Maisie Lee

This course is for Beginner and Improver Directors. Through games, exercises, small group work and scene study we will consider what a Director does - from selecting a play. mining the text, working with actors and the creative team, creating an ensemble, blocking and staging. The course will provide a toolkit of resources and techniques to instill confidence and enjoyment in your future performances.

This course will share a combination of unique, innovative physical, vocal, and energetic techniques chosen to root the actor for this journey, together with working on a group composition and text to integrate this holisitic, physical, and ultimately rewarding ensemble playing experience.

Getting Weird:

Experimental and Absurd Theatre

Tutor: Joy Nesbitt

The course gives new insights into how to act in and direct plays in new and interesting ways. The techniques translate to each participant’s particular circumstances and assist all participants to gain confidence in staging that enhances the central themes of performance.

“TELLING TALES”:

The Artist as Creative Storyteller

Tutor: Sue Cosgrave

This is a workshop for experienced actors and directors.

In a supportive and challenging environment the course seeks to nourish the imagination, encourage spontaneity, unlock inhibitions and unleash the creative voice.

The Events

Building around the big events of contemporary Irish texts, we will learn how to develop a concept for a play and how to translate it into vivid and fresh performances.  We will explore how to generate authentic blocking, how to focus action and build strong intention.

This course is open to Actors and Directors of all levels of experience. It is especially tailored to meet the needs of those who are looking to gain foundational techniques in acting.
